Destination Haiti

One Year On

For the next 12 months I will be working for the Irish humanitarian relief and development organisation, GOAL (www.goal.ie), as the WASH manager for their new UNICEF funded rural and schools water, sanitation and hygiene programme.

After 6 months working on rural water supplies in Ecuador (see www.ecuador-tom2010.blogspot.com), the Christmas turn around to be ready to fly to Haiti 3 weeks later is a whistle stop tour; I spend a day at Loughborough Uni's world renowned centre for water and sanitation in developing countries, WEDC where staff inform me how much work still needs to be done in Haiti and I stockpile resource materials from latrine building to hygiene promotion.

With a Haitian Creole phrasebook and a heavy laden suitcase I board a plane on 12th January 2011, the anniversary of last year's devastating earthquake. From all accounts it seems that there is still a massive need for a people living admist a cholera epidemic and political unrest following the nation's disputed first round of voting.
